Toxic Mud Lakes
Red mud is a waste product of the Bayer process, the principal means of refining bauxite en route to alumina. Discharge of red mud is hazardous environmentally because of its alkalinity.
When the lethal sludge dries, the wind carries tiny toxic dust particles into neighbouring communities. The high concentration of NaOH (caustic) burns the lining of the nose and lungs, when inhaled, and carries a cocktail of dangerous chemicals into the bloodstream. Caustic chemically burns skin.
